Castleton reunion 2005

It's not often you can get 12 adult children together from 2 different countries for a family reunion. This special occasion took place in Banff, Alberta Canada. I'd been married to Becky for over 5 years at the time, and this was the first time I met some of her siblings.

Becky's Birthday Card

The second comic book version of Becky. This one illustrates some running attire I gave to her for the spring. I gave it to her attached to a lanyard. A dialogue bubble saying “I’m older than you” was added. The deal was she could have anything she wanted until my birthday as long as she wore the picture round her neck. I think she wore it for an hour tops.

Father's Day 2007

Dear old Dad.

Mrs. Incredible

If there ever was a Mrs. Incredible it is my wife Becky. Inspired by her marathon training while filling her role as a full-time mother, I sketched this picture for her Christmas present in 2006—some under armor gear perfect for outdoor winter training.

Ambigram

I read Dan Brown’s Angels & Demon (which I liked better than the DaVinci Code), and I had to try it. It’s a stretch in some ways, but it works.

KFC Ryan

Once I finished the vector self portrait, it seemed very fitting that I put it with something finger lickin’ good.

Flink Painting

One of my first attempts mixing illustration and a digital touch.

Discovery Development Logo

Great example of a logo saying something it wasn’t intended to say. Discovery conjured up latitude and longitudinal lines, but the rendering looked and read too disco.

Teeth Advisors Team Tshirt

When a bunch of dentists get together for a fun run, doesn’t it only make sense to put a picture of a running tooth on their tshirts.

Destination Dodgers Logo

The Dodgers first and only season of dodgeball ended with a climactic win. It was a tough couple of games to get things started. A bunch of guys in their late 20s getting their tails kicked by a bunch of high schoolers. It took a while to tap into the skills learned in the third grade, but it meant sweet victory once we did.

Line art illustrations

Dr. Byck’s physical therapy illustrations got a facelift with these drawings.

Logos for kids

Each of my kids has a logo. It is unveiled once they are born. I decided that I wanted to give them something special on top of the name that we chose for them. My oldest daughter is named Alyssa Kathryn. She is our AliKat. Her logo is a combination of simple shapes (a balance between hard and soft edges). I pictured this balance coming out in her personality. She is 3.5 now and so far so good. She is very head strong and determined at times (hard edges), and at the same time a very thoughtful, meek, humble, tender, and cuddly (soft edges). Her first name is much more contemporary than her middle name (her grandmother’s name) just like the balance of the shapes in the logo. It makes a great abbreviated nickname as well. She has recognized this symbol everywhere we’ve placed it since she could first speak. We gave my second daughter Anna a strong name that could stand all on it’s own and a strong mark to go along with it. There is a balance in space with this mark as well as strong/soft elements. Soft color, strong straight lines, thicker line strokes, and rounded edges. Each arching letter in this mark represents the doors of opportunity we have in life. Some of them we have to open and others are opened for us. Doors have been especially interesting to me since visiting the campus of Yale University in New Haven CT. Each door on that campus has its own personality.
